ATHOL- Edward G. Billiel Sr., 72 , of 739 Daniel Shays Highway and formerly of Orange, died late Tuesday evening, March 18, 2008, at home following an illness.

Born on January 21, 1936 in Buckland, he was a son of Alfred and Dorothy (Armitage) Billiel and attended school in Greenfield and Turners Falls.

He was married to Doris A.(Cleveland ) on September 7, 1957 and they celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2007.

Ed joined the United States Marine Corps on April 7, 1954 and served during the Korean Conflict before is Honorable discharge on April 7, 1957.

Following his service in the Marine Corps, Ed worked at Erving Paper Mill from 1957 to 1971 and also worked at the Orange Post Office from May 1960 until January 1991. He also was a partner with the Andersons in A & B Catering from 1979 to 1997 then ran EB Caterers until January 1, 2000.

Following his retirement, he enjoyed his homes in Athol and Zephyrhills, Florida.
Active in the Town of Orange, he served 2 terms as a Selectman, as well as both the Orange Elementary School and Ralph C. Mahar Regional School committees. He was a member of the Camp Cheneo Association in Athol and was known for putting on the yearly clambake for the members. Ed was a member of the Athol-Orange Elks Lodge #1837, having served as Exalted Ruler, Secretary, and Past District Deputy. He was a member of the Wheelerville Community Club in Orange, the Orange Senior Citizens, Life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Life member of the American Legion Post #172 in Orange, the Athol and Orange Knights of Columbus both 3rd and 4th Degrees, member of Franklin County Selectmen's Association, serving as Treasurer, and member of the National AARP.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Doris Billiel of Athol; children, Michael D. Billiel and his partner, Sharon Nishizaki, of Arlington, VA, Kathy J. Hume, and her husband, Douglas, of Hudson, NH, Edward G. Billiel Jr., and his wife, Theresa, of Athol, and Cindy L. Marsh, and her husband Richard of Orange; grandchildren, Nina M. Shatos, Andrew R. Marsh, Mathew M. Marsh, Edward G. Billiel III, and Jacob A. Billiel; step grandchildren, Michael Hume, and Kristi Hume; sisters, Beverly Bisson of Fitchburg and Margaret Miller, and her husband Wilfred, of Colrain; a brother, Donald Billiel, and his wife, Kathryn, of Shelburne Falls; and a sister in law, Lucille Billiel of Orlando, Florida.

Ed was predeceased by brothers, Robert Billiel, Frederick Billiel, and Ernest Billiel.

Calling hours will be held on Monday evening, March 24, 2008 from 6-8PM at Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange.
The Elks service will be held at 7:00PM .

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday morning, March 25, 2008 at 10AM, at St. Mary's Church, 19 Congress Street, Orange. Fr. William Lunney will officiate.

Interment will follow in South Cemetery, Orange.
