County of Death: WABASHA

From Ron Manzow: Emma Champine died in the Spanish Flu epidemic. Plainview and Elgin were hit pretty hard, with Plainview having over 30 deaths in two weeks.

Obituary-Plainview Historical Soc.
Mrs. Emma Slawson Champine died at her home near Elgin, Minn., Nov. 3, 1918, after an illness of seventeen days duration of influenza which resulted in pneumonia.
She was born in Magnolia, Wis., on April 11, 1848, and was the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. William Slawson, who moved from there to Minnesota in 1863 and settled near Elgin. On the 21st day of July, 1872, she was united in marriage to Mr. John Champine, who passed away September, 1898, leaving her with four children.
Mrs. Champine remained on the home farm with her son, Harry, and daughter Iva, where she has been tenderly cared for in her declining years.
Never was a mother more dearly loved or more tenderly cared for than was Mrs. Champine. She was one of the dear helpful mothers, a true friend and a kind neighbor, who spent her life for others. Her passing away leaves one more desolate home and a void which can never be filled.
She leaves to mourn her loss her four children, Iva and Harry at home, Mrs. Will Irish of Plainview and Mrs. Arthur Irish of Beaver, two grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. M.B. Crary of Hilllsboro, Wis., Mrs. G.R. Burns and Mrs.George Hunter of Plainview, and one brother, Edward Slawson of Morris, Minn.
A short funeral service was held at the home Monday afternoon, Rev. Jesse Kenderdine officiating, and the remains of the loved one laid to rest beside her husband in Greenwood cemetery .
