In Memoriam

Mrs. R.A. Bowermon [sic] was born Jettie Pearl Perry on March 24, 1874 in Tarrant County seven miles northeast of Mansfield, Tex. She had three sisters and three brothers.

Mrs. Bowermon was a member of a pioneer family of Tarrant County. Her father, N.B. Perry, came from Carolina to Marshall in 1830. In 1843 he came to Tarrant County where he bought two sections of land. He had a herd of horses but had to leave because of the Indians. He went back to Tarrant County in 1845 and lived and died in the house he built. The first home was a log house, but a few years later lumber was hauled from Dallas and he built a nice comfortable home which still stand today.

Her mother, Margaret Burford Perry, came from Alabama with her family in 1852 and settled in Arlington. Mrs. Bowermon maternal grandmother, Eliza Johnson Buford, was a sister to Co. M.T. Johnson, one of the three men appointed by Major Arnold in 1849 to select a site for a fort and trading post to protect settlers from Indians. This site was the beginning of the present city of Ft. Worth.

Mrs. Bowermon was converted and joined the Baptist Church. She was baptized on Sunday, July 4, 1891. Rev. Walter Reddy was the pastor and that day baptized 63 people.

She and R.A. Bowerman were married on December 25, 1893. They moved to Mansfield in 1905. She was very active in all church affairs and served as president of the Ladies Aid for six years.

A son and a daughter were born to the Bowermons; the daughter died in infancy.

They moved to Hall County in 1916 and settled at Lakeview. Granny Bowermon, as she was known to eveyrone [sic], was loved and admired by all.

She was president of Lakeview S.M.S. for years, and took part in church and community work until she was forced to retire from active service. She was a wonderful person. Although she's gone, the memory of Granny Bowermon will live on. - Submitted by Mrs. H.W. Spear.
