ORANGE- Albert S. "Chape" Chappuis, 91, of 145 South Main Street, died early Friday morning, July 25, 2008 at Athol Memorial Hospital, following a long illness.
Born on January 2, 1917 in Orange, he was a son of Samuel and Myrtle (Dresser) Chappuis, graduating from Orange High School in 1934. He later graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon in 1935 and the American International College in 1942. While in school, he had worked at the Minute Tapioca Company and Chase Turbine, both of Orange.
Chape was married to Gail E. (Alexander) who died in 1988.
Chape breifly taught at the Orange High School in 1942 before enlisting into the United States Navy during World War Two. During his Naval career, he landed at Normandy on D-Day and served aboard the battleship, U.S.S. Texas, the destroyer, U.S.S. Satterlee, and the battleship, U.S.S. Iowa. Chape received a Purple Heart Award and was Honorably discharged in 1950, returning to Orange.
Following his return to Orange, he went to work at the Torrington Company from 1950-1959, serving as Plant Manager from 1955. He transferred to the Torrington plant in South Carolina in 1960 until 1977, at which time he became a realtor in the state of South Carolina till 1979.
Chape was on the Orange Finance Committee from 1958-1959, Trustee of the former Orange Savings Bank from 1956-1959, while in South Carolina, he was a Director of the Planning Board for Oconee County from 1964-1972, Board of Directors of Tri-County Technical College, Pendleton, SC, from 1970-1974, President of the Oconee County Country Club 1970-1972, Director of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce 1972-1976, City Councilman for Walhalla, SC, 1978-1979. Following retirement, he moved to Hamilton, Montana in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley to enjoy hunting, fishing, and golf.
He was a commercial trout fly designer and fabricator since 1955 when he sold his first flies to Abercrombie and Fitch. Chape stopped tying commercially at age 80 in 1997 to reap even greater enjoyment from golf and bowling.
After losing his wife, Gail, in 1988, Chape returned to Orange to reside with very dear partner and friend, Helen I. Frank.
Survivors include his son, John L. Chappuis, and his wife, Peggy, of Clancy, Montana; grandsons, Daniel, and his wife, Katie, of Valdosta, GA, and Michael, and his wife, Mitzi, of Kalispell, MT; two great grandsons, Logan and Chase; great granddaughters, Macee and Madison; and Helen Frank of Orange, MA.
