Medora's first husband, John Long, died on June 13, 1864 at the Skirmish at Riddell's Shop, VA while serving in the 7th SC Cavalry, Company D, Gary's Brigade. John Long is buried at Gilead Baptist Church in Jonesville, SC. Family tradition holds that their daughter Carrie saw his body draped over a mule when he was brought home to South Carolina. John Long and Medora had three children, but only Caroline and Thomas lived to adulthood.
