Married Mary Simmon
Several years before moving to Williamsburg, Eli was walking home to his farm in Chesterfield when he was struck by lightning. He was temporarily paralzyed, then got up and walked home.
Eli was living in Williamsburg with daughter Isabell, her husband Joseph Lewis Hayden & their son Robbie. Isabell saw the floodwater coming and yelled at Eli & Robbie who were a distance away. Eli grabbed Robbie and climbed a ladder leaning against a shed. Eli held Robbie above the water until they were swept out of sight. Robbie was found the next day about 1/2 mile downstream from the house with Eli's St. Bernard, Rover, sitting next to him. The dog disappeared and was found three days later in the same area as Robbie's location. Rover had unearthed Eli's arm and was sitting next to him.
