Birth year was 1861 per obit; marker engraved 1862, used here.

Son of John Riley Smallwood (1824-1898) and Minerva Hopper, who died when Robert was about 7 years old.

Family lore is that Sarah Belle left the family about 1920. It is not known if Robert remarried, no second marriage was noted in his obit.

Obituary-The Clinton Eye, Clinton, MO-Robert Samuel Smallwood was born in IA Apr 21, 1861, & died Jan 16, 1948, at the home of his son, Earnest, near Deepwater. His home has been in Lowry City, for about 30 years until failing health forced him to stay with his son. Mr Smallwood was a retired carpenter, always finding satisfaction in the work of his hands. In later years, he had busied himself with weaving baskets. His engaging personality won friends wherever he went. The early part of his life was spent in north MO. On Sep 13, 1889, he was united in marriage to Sarah Belle Scott at New Cambria. Five children were born to this union, all of whom survive as follows: Charles Smallwood of Brownington; Earnest, near Deepwater; Mrs Grace Jackson, Clinton; Mrs Hattie Noland, Grandview; Mrs Blanche Freeman, Eldorado Springs. Also surviving are the wife, 11 grandchildren, & 11 great-grandchildren. Mr Smallwood united with the Deepwater Methodist Church in 1920, later transferring his membership to Lowry City. Funeral services were conducted at the Browington Baptist Church Sun afternoon by Rev Mallory of Bolivar. Mesdames JW Dunning & Seth Bigler sang The Way of the Cross Leads Home, In the Sweet Bye & Bye, & When the Roll is Called Up Yonder, with Mrs JM Moore at the piano. Pallbearers were Robert & Walter Lee Smallwood, Bryan J Shroder, William Herman Jr, Junior Jackson & Sam Atchison. Burial was in the Deepwater CEM. Hurst funeral service in charge.
