Ord Preston Jr.; played role in bringing Chargers to city; founding director of La Jolla bank
By Blanca Gonzalez
He danced at the White House, fought in the Marshall Islands and found his life's partner during a visit to La Jolla. Ord Preston Jr., following a family tradition of service to country and community, earned a Silver Star during World War II, played a role in bringing the Chargers to San Diego and was a founding director of the Bank of La Jolla. Known as a master storyteller with a flair for limericks, Mr. Preston enjoyed sharing tales of his storied family, his time in the Marines and his days playing college baseball.

Mr. Preston died of natural causes January 22 at his La Jolla home. He was 91. Friends and family said Mr. Preston was able to enthrall an audience with his stories of bygone eras, whether it was family history going back to King George IV or the early days of La Jolla when cows grazed on the hillsides.

He was witty and fun and always had interesting stories to tell, a longtime friend said. I've never heard anything negative about him. He always had a smile on his face. Mr. Preston's stories got better as he got older, according to his grandson. No matter what the story was, he had a way of telling it that would captivate his audience, he said.

In spite of going through the ugliness of war, Mr. Preston was a happy person in life, his grandson said. He was always a positive, fun guy to be around. Mr. Preston enjoyed spending time at his homes in Borrego Springs and Hawaii, where he was a member of the Outrigger Canoe Club and the Lahaina Yacht Club. He was also a longtime member of the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club and the Los Angeles and San Diego Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, an exclusive club of Burgundy wine enthusiasts.

Ord Preston Jr. was born in 1917 in Washington, D.C., to Carolyn Murray Preston and Ord Preston. He attended Andover Academy, where he was quarterback of the football team. In 1939 he earned a degree from the University of Virginia, where he was a pitcher on the baseball team, a member of the St. Elmo Fraternity and on the swim team.

As a member of a prominent Washington military and banking family, Mr. Preston attended debutante parties at the White House during the years Eleanor Roosevelt was first lady. Mr. Preston's father was a Major in the United States Army during World War I and later was President and Chairman of the Union Trust Co., a Washington D.C. based banking firm. During a 1939 visit to La Jolla, Mr. Preston met his future wife, Marjorie Midge Ellis, a New England native who also was vacationing with her family.

Mr. Preston graduated from the United States Marine Corps Officer Candidates Class in Quantico, Virginia and was sent to the Pacific theater during World War II. He served from 1941 to 1945 and was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry as a communications officer of the 22nd Marines during an assault against enemy forces, said his daughter.

As an independent investor and entrepreneur, Mr. Preston was involved in a variety of businesses after the war, including building homes and apartments, the oil industry and an early pager company in the 1960s. He was also among a group of investors instrumental in bringing the Los Angeles Chargers to San Diego.

Mr. Preston enjoyed traveling and helping his wife with charity activities. The late Mrs. Preston was a founding member of Las Patronas, which stages the annual Jewel Ball to benefit a variety of charities.

Mr. Preston is survived by his three daughters of Del Mar, New York City and La Jolla; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one grandchild, Brook Gonzalez. Services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery. The family suggests donations to Las Patronas.
