-- FORT MILL - Mrs. Virginia Sturgis Crooks Womble, 89, died Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at Agape Hospice in Rock Hill.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at First Baptist Church Chapel, with the Rev. Jeff Bedwell and the Rev. Ralph Riley officiating. Burial will be at Unity Cemetery.
-- Born in Rock Hill, Mrs. Womble was a daughter of the late Al Heyward Sturgis Sr. and Annie Ray Miller Sturgis. She graduated from Winthrop College, with a B.S. in Home Economics, a master's in Special Education and Elementary Principal Certification. Mrs. Womble taught in the Fort Mill School District and later became principal at Fort Mill Elementary School. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, and served in many positions including Director of WMU, GA leader, Sunday School teacher, and flower coordinator. She was actively involved in the Fort Mill Garden Club and served on the Fort Mill Heart Fund and the United Way. She was the widow of Dr. Harold L. Crooks (1957) and Joseph Guy Womble.
-- Surviving are two daughters, Virginia "Ginny" Buchanan and her husband, John, of Fort Mill and Dixie Byrum of Fort Mill; her brother, David "Pete" Sturgis of Rock Hill; four grandchildren, Johanna B. Jackson, Ben Buchanan, Charlotte Byrum and Tina Byrum; and a great-granddaughter, Rae Jackson. She was preceded in death by a son, Chipper Womble.
-- The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Wolfe Funeral Home and other times at the home of Ginny and John Buchanan, 1630 Highway 21 By-Pass, Fort Mill.
