Last name is also spelled Helems or Hellems.
"Matt Hellems" was about 18 months of age when his parents sold their property in Botetourt County in preparation for their move to Wayne County, Indiana. After his parents' return to Virginia, Matt appears to have spent the remainder of his life in the Paint Bank area. After his father's death, Matt ended up with much of the property (six interests); he sold his interests to the property to Alexander C. Looney in 1877.
Though disabled, perhaps from childhood, Matt was an active man. The fact that he could read and write is documented by the diary he kept of the activities of the family and/or Paint Bank from 1876 until his death. This diary is now a valuable resource for historians. Matt always spelled the family name as HELLEMS.
His death record gives his name as William Madison Hellems; trade as that of shoemaker and later postmaster; cause of death was broncho pneumonia following a general decline.
