William's parents were Joseph and Mary Jane Pounds of Hancock Co. IL. After Joseph died in 1855, Mary Jane married Daniel Horner.
William enlisted at the age of 18 with the 139th Illinois Infantry. His younger brother Joseph Pounds enlisted at the age of 15 with the 7th Indiana Light Infantry and served two full years. Joseph is buried at Leavenworth National Cem., Leavenworth KS, and his monument on this site includes a photo of his stone.
William's only known child is Sidney Wesley Pounds, who died in Stockton, Frontier, Nebraska.

When a photograph of William's stone was requested, an FAG volunteer reported that "the Cemetery office confirmed that this burial is unmarked."
