Andrew was the son of Lawson and Martha (Jackson) Burns of Blount County, TN. He stated on his WWI Draft Registration that he had served 9 months as a private, but in which service was not noted. He married Julia Webb on June 7, 1913 in Blount County, TN. They had two children, Grace Burns (b. Aug. 15, 1915, d. Aug. 1, 1995), and Andrew Jackson Burns, Jr. (b. May 27, 1918, d. Jan. 9, 1977.)

He was buried on May 4, 1921 in Lewis and Clark (formerly known as Riverview) Cemetery in block 33, section 2, grave 2. The grave has no marker.
