Ray Edward Neilson, 85, beloved father, morfar, and farfar, passed away on December 17, 2009 in his home. He resided at 1884 South 900 East in the Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah at the time of his death.


Born May 5, 1924 in Glenns Ferry, Idaho, son of Carl Albert Neilson and Edna Mildred Farley.


He married Gunborg Maria Soderberg of Visby, Sweden in the Idaho Falls Temple.


He was an army veteran of World War II, LDS missionary to Sweden, former bishop, Korean branch president, and high councilor.


An accountant and businessman, he served several years as an executive with Salt Lake County Social Services before retiring in 1986. His wife preceded him in death in 1997.


He loved scouting and served as a scoutmaster and in other positions for much of his life. He was devoted to his faith and loved to serve his church and community. Service was his passion and only hobby.


He is survived by his brothers Delbert Neilson of Lake Stevens, WA, Grant Neilson of Rexburg, ID, Darwin Neilson (Lee) of Twin Falls, ID, Morris Neilson (Thea) of Salt Lake City, and his sister Helen Tennant of Boise, ID; his children Erik Neilson (Judy) of Seattle, WA, Anna Brown (David) of Salt lake City, Joseph Neilson (Taunia) of Caldwell, ID, Kristina Westbye (Steven) of Ft. Worth, TX, Leif Neilson (Mella Dee) of Taylorsville, and Lisa Widerburg (Gary) of Ogden; twenty grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.


Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Richards Ward Chapel, 860 Downington Avenue. A viewing will be held at 9:45 a.m.
Interment will be in the Mountain View Memorial Estates Cemetery, 3115 East Bengal Boulevard (7800 South), Cottonwood Heights.
