Richard graduated Milton Hershey High School in 1954.

He enlisted in the United States Navy on August 18, 1954 and fought in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was discharged in June 1974.

He married Laura F. Seidel on July 3, 1957 in Alaska. They had four children.

He liked to play Santa Claus at Christmas.

Dick was a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America.
