Col. Rodeheaver (Rody) H. Hicks, USAF (Ret), 88, of Sun City West, Arizona, passed away on December 15, 2009.

He was born on February 21, 1921 in Atkins, Virginia. He graduated from Marion College, Marion, Virginia in June 1940. He entered the Navy in July 1940 and was commissioned as Ensign in March, 1941 at Northwestern University Midshipmen School.

Rody served as Armed Guard Commander, providing Navy gun crews for merchant ships making trips across the Atlantic during the Wolf Pack attack days. One trip took him around Capetown to the Suez Canal during the battle for North Africa. He was then assigned as Gunnery Officer on DE 164, the USS Osterhaus during the battle for Guadalcanal and advancement in the South Pacific.

Following this service he was assigned as Commander of LSM 101 serving as Convoy Commander for many ships from Galveston, Texas to Panama and on to Pacific destinations. LSM 101 served at Layte, Manila and eventually was present in Tokyo Bay on VJ Day.

He resigned from the Navy in March 1946 as LCDR and pursued a dental education at Northwestern University. Upon graduation he entered the USAF as a Dental Officer and eventually served as an Oral Surgeon and Base Dental Surgeon managing several large Clinics. Colonel Hicks retired from Luke Air Force Base on August 31, 1974. His many decorations included the Legion of Merit.

He and his wife Aggie, have been long time residents of Sun City West and have earned the love and respect of many people.

He is survived by Aggie, his wife of 65 years, a brother, Leon, 94, of North Carolina and a sister, Rosemond, 96, of Virginia. Col. (Dr) Hicks will be remembered by those who knew him and served with him as a kind and generous man with superb leadership qualities and professional talent. A true patriot.

Memorial services will be held at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Camino Del Sol Funeral Chapel, 13738 Camino Del Sol, Sun City West, AZ followed by a ceremony with full military honors at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona located at 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd. Phoenix, AZ 85024. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any U.S. Veterans organization of your choice.
