Wilford A. Butler, Jr., a nationally recognized management consultant to the non-profit community, died on December 13, 2009. For twenty-four years (1962-1986) he was chief executive for Delta Upsilon International Fraternity and also led its educational foundation. He was instrumental in the relocation of the fraternity headquarters from New York City to Indianapolis and was active in promoting the State of Indiana and Indianapolis as a headquarters site for Greek-letter organizations. In 2009 he was given the distinguished alumni award, Delta Upsilon's highest honor. He was a President of the Fraternity Executives Association and took a lead role in the establishment of the American College Fraternity Bicentennial Commission, edited the association's monthly publication and wrote the fiftieth anniversary history of the Association which presented its Distinguished Service Award and honorary life membership. Other national fraternities recognized Butler's leadership, and he was the recipient of the Salsbury-Scott Interfraternity Award from Tau Kappa Epsilon and Theta Chi Fraternity Chapman-Alter Award for Interfraternal Excellence as well as the Theta Chi Citation of Honor for outstanding service to the fraternity movement. Following his tenure at Delta Upsilon, Butler established an association management firm to provide turnkey, interim management, and specialized program development to a client roster than numbered over 800 professional societies, trade associations and their foundations in the U.S. and abroad. He was actively involved in the Indiana Society of Association Executives and served as its president and later as head of its foundation. Butler established the society's newsletter, which continues to this day. He was recognized by being named "ISAE Association Executive of the Year." He was a member of the board of the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association and was involved in extending invitations to the American Society of Association Executives and other national groups to hold meetings in the city. Elected to the Board of Directors of the Columbia Club, Butler served the board as secretary and was then elected the first chairman of the Club's foundation. He was recognized for his leadership on the club board and foundation with presentation of the Columbian of the Year Award. He also served as a member of the board of the Greater Republican Finance Committee and was responsible for facilitating a major strategic planning effort for the organization which resulted in his receipt of board Member of the Year recognition. He was a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and was elected to the board of directors and also served on the board of the foundation of ASAE. He was Certified Association Executive, who was life certified. He chaired the CAE Certification commission, the CAE Appeals Committee, and the CAE Examination Committee. For ASAE, Butler created and directed a one day seminar for new chief executives and a companion program for CEO aspirants. He was a well known presenter on other association topics including association office management and membership attraction and retention. He was a frequent contributor to publications on association management. For his leadership in twenty-five professional, civic, charitable and educational organizations the American Society of Association Executives presented their highest leadership recognition, the Key Award. Wilford was the recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash recognizing his service to the State of Indiana, and was twice commissioned into the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels for the advancement of Kentucky. He was also commissioned as an Admiral of the Texas Navy. The City of Indianapolis named a day in his honor. His survivors include two sisters, Charlotte B. Terry of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and Gail B. Wakelee and brother-in-law, R. Heath Wakelee, of Rocklin, California.
