William H. Mitchell, 92, died at 6:13 a.m. Dec. 19, 2009, at St. Rita's Medical Center.

He was born April 30, 1917, in Bingham Canyon, Utah, to William L. and Tekla Carlson Mitchell, who preceded him in death. On Dec. 2, 1944, he married Alice Anne Dimond, who died Nov. 16, 1998.

Mr. Mitchell was a retired research engineer for Westinghouse. He had worked on numerous top secret military projects during World War II and immediately following. He received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Nevada, Reno, and his graduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi and Nu Eta Epsilon, both of which are honorary engineering societies. He was a member of the Shawnee Country Club, a 50-year member of Knights of Columbus 4th Degree. He was a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 54 and a member of St. Charles Catholic Church.

Survivors include four children, Kitty (Jim) Daney, of Toledo, Tekla (Tim) Murphy, of Lima, Valerie Creech, of Lima, and Bill Mitchell, of Washington, D.C.; 13 grandchildren, Cara (Joe) Fullen, Meredith Simeone, Ian (Michelle) Murphy, Devin Murphy, Gavin Murphy, Kevin Daney, Scott Daney, Megan (Seth) Shapiro, Allison (Matt) Hoefling, Bill Mitchell, Brian (Kate) Mitchell, Tony Creech and Adam Creech; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Norma Mitchell, and her daughters, Eileen, Judy and Marcie, all of California; two nephews, Tom and Dennis Carrigan, both of Utah; a niece, Carol (Pat) Mingarelle, of Erie, Pa., and a nephew, Drew (Nancy) Dimond, of Nashville, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Catholic Church. Father Stephen Blum and Father David Ross will officiate. Burial will follow in Gethsemani Cemetery.
