Flora was the eighth of ten children born to John and Susanna (Oatman) Pitman. She was born in Harrison County, Indiana, but her family (including her grandmother Christiana Pittman) moved to Knox County, Illinois about 1840 after the death of her grandfather John Pittman Sr. in 1839.
