OBITUARY FOR:
Howard D. Holmquist

September 19, 1923 - December 14, 2009

Howard D. Holmquist – at Silver Cross Hospital, Monday, December 14, 2009. Age 86 years.

Survived by his wife of 60 years Phyllis A. Holmquist (Nee Johnson), daughter Laurie (Robert) Farkas of Joliet and son Larry (Cindy) Holmquist of Greensboro, N.C. Two brothers Richard (Joyce) Holmquist of Joliet and Gordon (Gloria) Holmquist of New Lenox. Several nieces, nephews and one cousin Norma Lindberg of Martinez, GA.

Preceded in death by his parents Carl and Alma Holmquist, a sister Phyllis M. Holmquist and two brothers Leonard and Donald Holmquist.

Howard was born in Joliet and was a lifelong resident. Graduate of Joliet Township High School Class of 1945, after returning from service. Howard began his career with the Carlson Funeral Home in 1942 while in high school. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until 1945. Graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 1946 and was licensed as a funeral director in 1947. Howard was co-owner of the Carlson Funeral Home from 1983 until his semi-retirement in 1988.

Lifetime member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, serving on various committees and the church council for several years.

Howard has served as a Trustee for the East Joliet Fire Protection District for the past 8 years. He was a 50 year member of Mt. Joliet Lodge #42 A.F. & A.M., and a 50 year member of American Legion Harwood Post #5. Also a 50 year member of the Illinois Funeral Directors Association, the Will County Funeral Directors Association and the Will County Old Timers Baseball Association.

Funeral Information

Lying in state at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 412 E. Benton Street, Saturday, December 19 from 9:00 A.M. until services at 10:00 A.M. Rev. Rodney A. Juell officiating. Interment Elmhurst Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Rd., Friday from 1:00 – 8:00 P.M. with Masonic Services at 7:00 P.M.
