He was the son of the late Earl and Edith Ellis of Louisa.
He was preceded in death by his son, Matthew Teal Ellis.
He is survived by his best friend and wife, Mary Elizabeth Konhaus Ellis; his daughter, Amy Elizabeth Ellis Chase; his son-in-law, Robert Scott Chase; his grandson, Scotty Chase; his brother and sister-in-law, Dixon and Margaret Ellis; a cousin, Nancy Woolfolk, of Louisa; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A graduate of RPI, he was an avid bird hunter and fisherman who never lost his sense of humor.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 14, 2009, at First English Lutheran Church, followed by a graveside service at Hillcrest Cemetery in Louisa.
Arrangements were made by Bennett Funeral Home, Richmond.
