Nadine was born to August E and Myra Kathryn "Katie" (Westfall) Peterson on July 18, 1910 in Bertrand, Phelps, Nebraska. She was only 9 years old when her father died. Her mother and 3 siblings moved from their farm to the town of Bertrand next door to her Grandparents Newton and Mary Jane (Redman) Westfall.
She graduated from High School in May of 1928. Soon after taking test and such she began teaching in a one room school house in another county. She didn't stay a teacher but a couple of years; she then went to work in a dentist office and met Eugene "Gene" Murray Simmons who came into the office for dental work. They married March 05, 1939 in Hill City, Graham, Kansas, eloping. After about 6 months of marriage they moved to live with his father on the family farm and she quit her job.
In Nov 1940 their only child was born and became the light of their lives.
Nadine cared for her home, raised chickens selling the eggs, always had a large garden and canned. She made some of the best pickles one would ever want to eat, both Dill and Sweet.
Farming began to not work out so well in the 60's and they had to sell the farm, donating a bunch of old farm things to the museum in Lexington or Dawson County. They rented a house in the county and Gene went to work at a local Mill.
They were active in their Church and kept in touch with many friends after moving to Arizona in 1972 to be near their son and four Grandchildren.
Nadine was widowed in 1990 after 51 years of marriage. Up until she was 87 years old she lived in their home in Phoenix. Do to health problems she then moved in with her son Gene and his wife Loy. In 2000 she took a bad fall during the night breaking some bones in her back and ended up in a wheelchair. Her Daughter-in-law quit work, and cared for Nadine from then on enjoying doing so.
Nadine's sister Welda came to visit each year so that was always a highlight for her.
After her son retired he and Loy decided that they'd had enough of the big city and wanted to be in a small farm town again as they were both used to, so after some searching Missouri, was decided on. Nadine was so pleased because then they would be much closer to Nebraska and her sister. Sadly she had begun feeling ill and said nothing until after the move on April 12th. By then she had a bad infection that had gone to her kidneys. Medication seemed to be working, but after a little over 2 weeks she took a turn for the worse. The hospital confirmed she'd had a heart attack. Three days later Nadine passed peacefully in her sleep May 05, 2004 at 93 years of age.
As she had wished, she was cremated as her husband had been, she was taken back to Phoenix and place beside him.
Nadine is survived by her Son, Eugene Murray Simmons Jr. and wife W. Loy (Frisk) Simmons. Ex-Daughter-in-law Ardis Ilene (Kahle) Martin, Granddaughters; Debbie Sue Peters-husband David; Cyndi Lynn Nowicki-husband Matt; Julie Kay Piech, Grandson Kenneth Leon Simmons-wife Kristy, 9 Great-Grandchildren, her sister Welda Bothe and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, sister Neva Ilene (Peterson) Lanners and brother Robert Ellwyn Peterson.
