Rebecca Ann Caldwell was born on May 29, 1881, in Vigo County, Indiana, after her father's death. She married Robert "Ronnie" Butler, a farmer, at age 13 on July 19, 1894. She bore him three children before his untimely death on February 22, 1900 at about age 25. At that time, her first child, Goldie, had already died, and she was left with son Robert Lawrence, 3, and daughter Sylvia E. "Dorothy," 10 months old. She was still only 19 and placed the children in a children's home. In 1901 she remarried to William D. Murphy in Edgar County, Illinois, and married again on December 6, 1907 to John H. Whiteside. She married her final husband, James Henry McCulley, in about 1910. He died in 1920. In about 1923 she moved to Kokomo, Indiana, and joined her brother, John Alexander Caldwell, who never married. They remained steadfast partners for 34 years. The 1930 census shows that her daughter "Dorothy" Woodward had come to join them.
