Obituary:

Died. At his farm, four miles south of Salina, at 8:20 P. M., Feb. 3d, 1881, Peter H. Berg, aged 63 years, 3 months and 21 days.

Funeral services at the house were conducted by Rev. A. J. Hartsock, of the English Lutheran church of Salina, who was the pastor of the deceased at the old homestead in Pennsylvania.

Peter H. Berg was born October 12th, 1817, in Chur-Hessen, Germany. In the year 1838 he came to America and settled in Somerset, Penna. In 1841 he married Miss Mary Ann Shoup, of Somerset, and removed the same year to Cambria county, Penna., where he remained until Feb 2d, 1874, when he and his family came to Saline county, Kansas. Mr. Berg was an honored citizen of Pennsylvania—honest, upright, faithful and generous in all his dealings and associations. He was loved and highly esteemed by all who knew him. He was a life long member of the Lutheran church—faithful to his covenant vows. He realized his greatest joy in laboring for the advancement of the church and the glory of God. For long years he was an official member of the congregation, dying an elder of St. John’s English Lutheran church, of Salina. His end was peace. For many years he suffered from cancer in this face. The family sought skillful medical aid, but all to no avail. Death had marked him for his own. Peace to his ashes. “The memory of the just is blessed.” He leaves to mourn his untimely death a widow and nine children—eight of whom are in Saline county, one of them Mayor of Salina. All are excellent citizens. Hartman, the only one remaining in Pennsylvania, is Superintendent of Public Schools of Cambria.
