George Darrell Cooper
February 17, 1928 - December 13, 2009

George Darrell Cooper, 81, died Sunday, December 13, 2009, at an area hospital.

He was born February 17, 1928, in Wea, Kansas, to Edwin David Cooper and Helen Alice (Williams) Cooper.

Mr. Cooper attended and graduated from Paola, Kansas High School.

He was a scheduler/planner for Atlas Powder Co, retiring May 1, 1983 after more than 24 years.

At one time he was the owner/operator of Tara Motel and Joplin Trailer City.

He served 10 years on the Diamond R-4 School Board, including 8 years as president.

He also served as a coach and manager in both Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball.

Darrell served in the US Army from 1946 - 1947, then went into the Kansas Guard, and was called back to active duty from 1950 - 1952, being honorably discharged and having achieved the rank of Corporal.

He was a one-time member of the Boy Scouts of America, Masonic Lodge NO. 12 of Emporia, Kansas, Sons of American Legion, Sigma Pi, and the Elks, and was a member of the Diamond Christian Church.

Darrell married Betty Jo Case, of Osawatomie, Kansas, on April 24, 1952, in Harrison, Arkansas; Betty survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Gary Dean Cooper and wife, Nancy, Manchester, MO, and Bruce Curtis Cooper and wife, Cindy, Chillicothe, IL: a daughter Kelly Colleen Cooper-Hall, and husband, Pete, of Webb City, MO; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and a half sister, Joan Kay Phillips, Florence, AZ.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie Lou Bringolf, Wichita, KS.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 3:30 pm at Diamond Cemetery, with military honors.

Bob Lyttle, minister, will officiate.

Serving as pallbearers will be Gary Cooper, Bruce Cooper, Pete Hall, Travis Cooper, Jason Cooper and Alexander Hall.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 9 am - 7:30 pm, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 - 7:30 pm.
