As one of the first settlers of the county he had a great many things to pass through that we know nothing about. It required an unusual constitution to endure these hardships. He suffered the loss of his left arm 54 years before his death, but managed to support himself and his family, despite this handicap. Most of his lifetime he was engaged in farming, but was also a staunch supporter of the church, and was converted in 1859, at Wesley Chapel, during a meeting held by A.J. Frisbie, and united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Mt. Tabor. Later on he transferred his membership to the Methodist Protestant church at Bethel. To this first union were born nine children, two sons and seven daughters, all of whom survive except one daughter, who died in infancy.
