Joseph and Mary Catherine moved to Christian County, Illinois for a short time in the 1860's. In 1871, the family moved once again to Chillicothe.
Joseph owned and operated a brewery east of Chillicothe. It has been said that he was a very generous employer, a good neighbor, and would often contribute to causes which promoted the town. He turned over the operation of the brewery in 1877 to his son, Frank. The business continued until 1888.
