Israel Barlow was a very spiritual person, having been taught by his parents and his own convictions that believing in Christ and living a righteous life was essential. His friends made a mockery of him so he decided if he was to be a Christian he would have to go it alone. His family moved to Mendon, New York , in 1825 . In 1831 he heard the missionaries when they visited his home. He soon determined that what they said was what he wanted. He rode 200 miles on his horse to meet the Prophet. Being impressed with what he saw and learned, he returned to Mendon and was baptized. The family moved to Kirkland where they helped build the temple. Israel , being a sixth cousin to the Prophet Joseph , was very close to him. Israel and his family endured the Missouri problems but fled and found safety in Quincy, Illinois . It was here that Israel and Elizabeth were married, she having joined the Church earlier. Elizabeth was a college graduate, while Israel had been deprived of much of his early schooling. Elizabeth taught the Prophets and many of the other church leaders' children. Because of a friendship Israel had made with a Dr. Isaac Galland , the saints were able to purchase much of the land in Commerce, which later became Nauvoo . When the exodus came, Brigham Young asked him to stay behind and help others prepare to leave. He didn't leave until 1847-8 . He filled a mission to England , bringing 584 saints to the States. Shortly before his death he was ordained Stake Patriarch.
