SAFLEY
James Safley was born in Red Oak Grove, Cedar county, Iowa, April 12th, 1850 and died at his home near Springville, Iowa, Jan. 25, 1912.

His early life was spent in his father's home at the place of his birth, save a short time while he was away in business schools.

He farmed in Calhoun, county several years and then returned to Cedar county, where he was married to Elizabeth Johnston, March 30th, 1886.

They began housekeeping in Ida county, where they farmed for six years.
He then bought a farm in Calhoun county and lived there for ten years, when he sold his farm at that place and bought the present home near Springville where he spent the last ten years of his life.

Almost two years ago he began to fail in health but not a great time longer than year ago has be been kept from work.

He gradually failed to the day of his death. He was patient and cheerful all through his sickness and quietly and peacefully passed away at 4 p.m. Jan. 25th, 1912.
Six children were born to him and his wife. Robert, the first born, died July 28th, 1889. The other five who were with him at the time of his death are: James T., Jean E., Frances E., Agnes I., and Roland W.

Besides his five children, he leaves to mourn him a loving wife who faithfully cared for him during his sickness, three brothers, Alford of Tipton, Iowa; Will of Bedford, Iowa and John of Ida county; three sisters, Mrs. John Wade of Mt. Vernon, Mrs. John Johnston and Agnes Safley of California.

Besides these near ones, there are numerous distant relatives.
He took great pleasure in life, but expressed often his willingness to be taken.
All through his sickness he felt very grateful to his faithful neighbors who helped him pass away many weary hours by calling to see hm frequently.

He took great pleasure in the education of his children and the fact that they were well through high school was a great comfort to him.

He made but few requests, one was that the mother provide each one of his children with a good Bible in memory of their father.
The burial took place in the family lot in Ida co

unty near the place where he began housekeeping and the birth place of his three eldest children. It was his request that he might be buried beside his first born. Alford Safley, a brother of the deceased accompanied the remains to that place.
