Kingston Man Operated Long-line Streetcars
Philip J. Ferry, Sr. 350 North Sprague Avenue, Kingston, died yesterday afternoon at 4:30 in Nesbitt Memorial Hospital. He had been ill three weeks.
A native of Jeanesville Mr. Ferry was a resident of Kingston for more than 50 years. He was employed by Wilkes Barre Transit Corporation and retired in 1946 after 45 years service.
For many years Mr. Ferry was a motorman and conductor on the Duryea and Harvey's Lake streetcars. For a time before he retired he worked as a clerk in the transit company's West Side office and assisted E. L. Hossler, superintendent of transportation.
Mr. Ferry was widely known through Wyoming Valley and endeared himself to a host of friends. He was active in church and political affairs and was a candidate for tax collector of Kingston. He was a member of St. Ignatius Church and its Holy Name Society.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Helen (Edit: wife's name is Ellen) Cahalan Ferry; four children, Dr. Philip Ferry, Kingston; Thomas L. P. Ferry, Kingston; Mrs. Bart Woodhouse, Atlantic City, and Mrs. William Shaughnessy of Wichendon, Mass.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday morning from 233 Wyoming Avenue, Kingston, followed by a requiem mass in St. Ignatius Church at 9:30. Interment in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Pringle. Viewing will be Monday and Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9.
