She was born March 22, 1919, to Claude and Mary(Eddy)Ashby. After being an orphaned at a young age, she was raised by an aunt and uncle, Anna and Ernest Benson and attended the Appanoose County and Centerville Schools. Helen married A. F. "Tolly" Bradley on January 29, 1938 in Unionville, Missouri. He preceded her in death. For many years she was a Gray Lady volunteer at Knoxville Veteran's Hospital and was a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Helen worked in food service for years including Ashby's Bakery and Centerville Public Schools. While her health permitted she and her husband had a large garden every year and shared canned and frozen produce with friends and relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983, sister, Hallene; and brothers, Clyde "Red" and Ronald Ashby.
Helen is survived by a son, Buddy(Marianne)Bradley of Centerville; grandchildren, Michael R. Bradley of Centerville, Shelley(Dave)Frasher of Centerville, and Suzanne(Jeff)Ishmael of Story County; seven great grandchildren, Joanna Hiatt, Kyle Ishmael, Danielle(Dave)Lewis, Justin and Sydney Dommer, Bradley and Smantha Frasher; a sister-in-law, Mary Ashby; several nieces and nephews; and longtime friends Charlene and Wilbur Hayes.
Private burial will be conducted at the Oakland Cemetery, Centerville, Iowa. The family has requested in lieu of flowers. A memorial has been established to the Centerville Nursing and Rehab Center Activity Fund and may be left at or mailed to the Thomas Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S, 18th St, Centerville, Iowa 52544.
