Jonathan married Josephine Garner July 8, 1869 at her farm home near Nodaway, Andrew Co, MO.
They had 11 children: Charles, Leona, Will, David, Eva, Leliah, Ora, Ethel, Myrtle, Clarence, and Paul. Jonathan was a farmer, first owning land in Grape Grove Twp,Ray Co, MO, inherited from his father, William Newby. He and his family sold their land and drove their cattle across the Missouri River into Kansas and settled in SW Ness Co as ranchers. From there they moved to Marion Co, KS and then Anderson Co, KS, where his mother Hannah Lee (Adams) Newby died; then to Johnson Co, KS, and finally to Rice Co, KS. In his later years he carried the mail from the train depot to the post office in Lyons, KS. He and is wife also lived in Sterling, KS, after he retired. Both were active members in the Christian Church.
