LYONS - Clarence Edwin Bradford, 100, died Jan. 3, 1998, at Lyons District Hospital.
He was born May 21, 1897, at rural Brookville, the son of Henry David and Stella Ruth Beebe Bradford. A Lyons resident since 1924, he was a retired mine superintendent at the Carey Salt Mine in Lyons.
He belonged to the United Methodist Church, the Odd Fellows Lodge, Masonic Lodge and American Legion, all at Lyons. He was the last known World War I veteran in Rice County, having served in the U.S. Army.
On Sept. 18, 1921, he married Ellen Gertrude Sneath at Ellsworth. She died Nov. 15, 1975.
Survivors include: a daughter, Joyce Fail, Lyons; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Vera Zody; five brothers, Chester, Selva, Orla, Glen and Eli Bradford; and four sisters, Myrtle and Ethel Lorenz and Bertha and Laura Sneath.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Lyons, with the Rev. Tom Eastman presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sillin Funeral Home, Lyons. Burial will be in Lyons Municipal Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the church or to Lyons District Hospital, both in care of the funeral home.
