GLENN W. UPDIKE, a long-time resident of Gillett, died Thursday morning, May 13, 2004, in the care of the Bakercrest Home for the Elderly, where he had resided for the past few years. Born on June 18, 1917 in Gillett. Glenn was the son of the late A. Lincoln and Caroline Knapp Updike. He married his lifelong companion of 65 years, Frances Griffen, on March 17, 1939. Together they devoted their lives to raising a family, serving the Lord, and may years of caring for their family farm in Gillett. He was a founding member of the South Creek Evangelical Church. Surviving are his loving family; his wife, Frances Griffen Updike, Millerton; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Margaret Updike, Pine City; Daniel and Evelyn Updike, Hamlin; five grandchildren, James (Cris) Updike, Amy (Bob) Atwater, Dr. Glenn Updike, Mattie (Joel) Zarpentine, and Daniel (Caryn) Updike; three great-grandchildren, Eli, Jenna, and "AJ", and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Glenn was predeceased by his four brothers, Chester, Foster, Charles and Lynn Updike and his three sisters, Catherine Fowler, Blanche Brewer and Grace Palmer. Funeral services were held on May 16 in the funeral chapel at Caywood's Funeral Home and Gardens, Southport, NY, with Byron Kain, Pastor of the South Creek Evangelical Free Church officiating. Interment will take place in the Gillett Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
