Challie was the eldest son of Zion Blyth and Mittie Horton Cornelius. He had two brothers and three sisters {incorrect}. On March 23, 1919, he married the former Martha Graves. To this marriage came five children: William Challie Jr., Helen, Jack Graves (deceased), Betty Doris and Annie Carol.
In 1929, Challie bought machinery in Nectar, Alabama: gin, sawmill, grist mill and blacksmith shop. Later on he added a planer, shingle mill and hammermill. Challie sawed timber for the Nectar and Little Warrior bridges. In 1934, Challie sawed the timber for Hayden School. In 1939, due to illness, he retired and sold all machinery and property. He and Mrs. Cornelius moved to Cleveland, Alabama and operated a heading mill for Cleveland Cooperage Company of Dekalb County, Ohio. Later the company transferred him to Thomasville, Alabama where he set up a cleat mill. He operated this mill for nine years before returning to Blount County in 1955.
Challie went to work for Robbins Machinery Company operating a drill press. When the company moved to Birmingham, Alabama, Challie again retired but opened an automatic saw filing shop. He continued this operation until his untimely death in 1969. Mr. Cornelius is entombed at Mt. Joy Cemetery, Five Points, Alabama.
