Born in England, he immigrated to the United States in 1845 and settled in Madison, WI after a short stay in New York. It appears that he was with a brother, George W. Hawes.

When the Civil War started, both he and his brother George enlisted with Company G (Wis.), 1st Regiment, United States Sharpshooters on September 19th, 1861. Joseph as a Private, George as a Corporal. Jospeph served with them until he was mustered out on Sept. 22, 1864 at the expiration of his term.

He returned to Madison WI, and joined Company D of the 47th Wisconsin Infantry as a Second Lieutenant on Feb. 16th, 1865. He was commissioned First Lt. on June 27th, 1865, and mustered out of service on Sept. 4th, 1865 at Nashville, TN. at the end of the war.

His brother George had died of disease at Gaine's Hill, VA on September 14th, 1862.

He married Katherine Elizabeth Dodd on Christmas Day, December 25th, 1873. After the war, he worked as a Locomotive Engineer in Wisconsin.
