Rhoda Ann (Hampton) Eatmon was the adopted daughter of Kinchen Eatmon and Susannah born most likely in Johnson Co., TN. Her blood parents are unknown. Her legal guardian, Kinchen, was noted in the 1830 Nash Co., NC Census. The family then moved to Johnson Co., TN and noted in the 1840 census. This is probably the time they adopted Rhoda Ann. The family then moved over to Washington Co., TN and noted in the 1850 Census. "Rhonda Hampton" was age 20 living with her legal guardians in Washington Co., TN. Sometime before 1860, she and her adopted parents moved to Burnsville, Yancey Co., NC. She worked as a waitress at an Inn where she met politician Thomas Lanier Clingman. They had a son together out of wedlock. Clingman was a businessman, mountain explorer (Clingman's Dome named after him), Confederate General and legislator for North Carolina and the United States. He never married and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Asheville. Rhoda found love and married John Angel.
