Mrs. Juanita Reed Bedingfield Lackner, one of the first teachers to work with students at the Tremont Environmental Educational Center in the Great Smoky Mountains, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge from complications of illness. She retired in 1989 after teaching sixth grade at Cedar Hill and Jefferson Junior High School for a total of 20 years.

The daughter of Mildred Margaret Reed and Hoyt Yandell Bedingfield of Alabama, both of whom are deceased, Mrs. Lackner was born June 6, 1927, in Brighton, Ala., in her grandfather Reed's Methodist Parsonage.

Her childhood was spent in Rogersville, Ala. She and her family lived in what had been the home of her maternal great-grandmother, Emma L. Oliver. She acquired her love of nature from living there, spending long days in the woods and in the creek on the property.

A member of Phi Beta Kappa, several honorary societies, and Gamma Phi Beta sorority, she graduated from Birmingham-Southern College in 1947, after which time she worked at Southern-Research Institute in Birmingham, Ala., for five years. She then moved to Oak Ridge in 1952 with her first husband, George Thomas Chapman, who died in 1986.

During her early years in Oak Ridge, she and her husband taught square dancing. She was a member of the Oak Ridge Chorus and the ORCMA board and worked both in Girl Scouts and with Campfire Girls. She also taught Sunday School at First United Methodist Church. After her daughters entered Junior High School, she began teaching in Oak Ridge.

Because of her love of nature, she earned a Master's degree in environmental education from the University of Tennessee in 1975.

After retirement she became interested in nature photography and raising flowers. She also enjoyed photographing various activities at Kern Church.

In recent years she had been researching her genealogy and thoroughly enjoyed searching old records in libraries, courthouses, on the Internet, and interviewing and corresponding with people about her ancestors.

She and Leonard Bruce Lackner, of Oxford, Mich., were married April 21, 1989. They met at a National Wildlife Summit at Bowdoin College in Maine. They both enjoyed traveling to many Elderhostels, many of which were overseas and taking ORICL courses. They have been members of Kern Memorial United Methodist Church since 2001.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughters and their families, Carolyn Anne Chapman Lawhorn and Donald Wayne Lawhorn of Knoxville and Mary Katherine Chapman Horn and Andrew Horn of Marietta, Ga.; five grandchildren, Joseph Chapman, Amanda Tate, Thomas McKager Lawhorn, Matthew Reed and Jocelyn Sarah Horn.

She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn Anne and Patrick McCue, Athens, Ala.; her brother and sister-in-law, Hoyt Yandell Bedingfield Jr. and Nancy Thomas, Nolensville, Tenn.; a niece, Karen and her husband, Brian Dauphin, and twins, Alexandra and Phoebe; and nephews, Hoyt Y. Bedingfield III and his daughter, Taylor, and Michael McCue and his wife, Pam.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at Kern Memorial United Methodist Church. The funeral will follow at the church at 6 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions to Kern Memorial United Methodist Church, 451 E. Tennessee Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
