Margaret Doreen Mathews Bartko, 78, died June 28, 1995, at her Palmer home. A funeral was held at St. Innocent Orthodox Christian Cathedral. Graveside services were at Palmer Pioneer Cemetery. The Very Rev. Nicholas Molodyko-Harris officiated.

Mrs. Bartko was born Feb. 12, 1917, in Brandon, Manitoba, the only child of the Rev. Howard Mathews and Sarah Ethel MacDonald. After the death of Mrs. Bartko's father, her mother married the Rev. Augustus Parson. She grew up and attended grade school and high school in Detroit and received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Minnesota. She married Dr. Harold Bartko in 1942 and they moved to Alaska in 1961. Mrs. Bartko taught elementary school for 30 years in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Nome and Palmer. She founded the Orthodox Church of America in 1977. Her family said: ''Margaret had many virtues as a wife and mother and was always young at heart and was dedicated to her family.'' Her son, Harold, said she instilled within him spiritual fortitude and taught him that the means are usually less important than the result in an endeavor. She loved the beauty of Alaska, traveling, teaching children and was an avid reader. She also enjoyed dining out, attending church and her Scottish heritage, especially hearing the bagpipes. Other things she enjoyed were her rose bushes and her Canadian calico cat named Collie. Mrs. Bartko was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the American Cancer Society, Republican Women's Club and the Lazy Mountain Homemakers. Her family said she was much loved and will be missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her five children, Douglas, Howard, Harold, Ted and Amy, and four grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Kehl's Palmer Mortuary
