Elizabeth Mariah Weddle Matlock was my gggrandmother. She married my gggrandfather William Robert Matlock in July 1850 in Jackson county Indiana. They were the parents of 14 children. Their children were Nancy Caroline, Mary Elizabeth (my great-grandmother), James Ransom, Susan Malvinia, Juliann, Sarah Jane, Evaline, Lucy, George McClellan (Mack), Ella Mae, Charles William (Bill), Dora Effie, David Henry, and Robert Orlen.

It is said that Elizabeth served as a battlefield nurse in the Civil War while her husband served in Company B of the 50th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He served until his regiment was captured by the Confederates in September 1862 at the seige of Munfordsville, Kentucky. He was then paroled and sent to Indianapolis, Indiana where he was paroled due to poor health.

After the war my family moved to Iowa and then to southeastern Kansas. Then about 1879 they moved to Franklin county Arkansas where William Robert died in 1895. They are shown in the 1880 US Census of Franklin county.

Sometime after the 1900 census Elizabeth moved with about four or five of her children to Oklahoma where she died in 1913. She was quite a lady! She was like many other women of her time. She was tough and could handle just about anything from a garden hoe while working in the fields to a shotgun if she needed to. She also knew how to handle an ax. She did all of this while keeping her house and raising 14 children and in the meantime serving as a battlefield nurse for over a year. Yes, she was quite a lady!
