Dortha Halva, 85, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, in St. Luke's Hospital. Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness. Services: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, Vinton, where friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Jim Blair will officiate. Burial: Evergreen Cemetery. She was born Sept. 29, 1916, in Benton County, to Frank and Stella (Hittle) Garlick, and graduated from the Brandon High School in 1933. On Feb. 2, 1937, she married Rudolph "Rudy" Halva at Morrison, 111. The couple farmed and raised their sons in Benton County. Rudy preceded his wife in death on Feb. 28, 1983. For the past two years, Dortha was a resident of the Rock Ridge Residential Care Center in Shellsburg. Dortha was a member of the Vinton Presbyterian Church, and she enjoyed gardening and flowers. She is survived by her sons, Carroll Halva and wife Mary of Amana, Loren Halva of Spirit Lake and Gary Halva and wife Karen of West Union; her grandchildren, Jeanine Halva-Neubauer and husband Glen of Greenville, S.C., Roland Halva of Shoreview, Minn., Rodney Halva of Phoenix, Ariz., Lance Halva and wife Kristi of Hollis- ter, Calif., Aaron Halva of Brooklyn, N.Y., Jennifer Halva of Stockton, Calif., Kerry Halva-Cash and husband Bill of Ber wick and Jessica Halva of Chandler, Ariz.; seven greatgrandchildren; and four sisters, Ila Hepker and husband Ralph of Vinton, Donna Pessina and husband Bill of Aurora, 111., and Virginia Squier and husband Floyd and Rosemary Kampman and husband Les, all of Vinton. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Marion and Myron Garlick; one sis ter, vera Alcorn; ana one grandchild, Tracy Halva. A memorial fund has been established.
