LAVALE — Richard B. "Dick" "Bud" Briner, 77, of LaVale, died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at his home.

Born May 31, 1931, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late John and Frances (Grabenstein) Briner. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen Margaret (Logsdon) Briner; daughter, Angela L. Long; granddaughter, Angela L. Emerick; two brothers, Leo Briner and John Briner; and one sister, Margaret Lynch.

Dick was retired from PPG Industries, B & O Railroad, and had also previously been employed at the Celanese Corporation. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict where he received a Purple Heart, Medal of Valor, three bronze stars, and the United Nations Service Medal. Dick was a member of the Army Reserves for over 20 years where he was a mess hall manager for the 265th Supply Unit in Cresaptown. He was a member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, the Cresaptown Eagles 2883, Knights of Columbus Cumberland Council 586, Haystack Mountain Sportsman Club, and Veterans of Foreign War Henry Hart Post 1411. Dick also volunteered to prepare taxes for the AARP and was a volunteer for the LaVale Athletic Association, where he mowed the lawn at Ort's field and LaVale Lions Field.

Surviving are six daughters, Christina B. Lease and husband Larry, of Keyser, W.Va., Pamela M. Layman, of Cumberland, Cynthia A. Whittington and husband Rodger, of Clearville, Pa., Dianna L. Smith and husband Douglas, of Cumberland, Patricia A. Emerick, of Cumberland, and Regina E. Lease and husband James, of Barton; one son, John T. Briner and fiancé Shirley A. Guinn, of Westernport; son-in-law, Rodney D. Long and wife Susan, of Oldtown; two sisters, Lenora Schneider and husband Frederick, of Meadville, Pa., and Kathleen Wolf, of LaVale; sisters-in-law, Margaret Briner, of Levittetown, Pa., and Mary Dorothy Briner, of Reisterstown; two brothers, James Briner and wife Judy, of Ridgeley, W.Va., and William Briner and wife Mary Ann, of Cumberland; and fifteen grandchildren, Natalie A. Long, Rodney D. Long and wife Angie, Molly M. Long, Eric A Bagatti and wife Jennifer, Danny K. Gibson II and wife Billie Jo, Joseph C. Bagatti and wife Cherie, Jason M. Layman and fiancé Cindy George, Heather A. Dicks, Crystal G. Whittington, Cassie L. Love and husband J.R., David A. Smith and fiancé April Riddell, Aliyaah M. Smith, James R. Lease, and Jesse J. Lease; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; and num-erous nieces; nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown scarpellifh.com , on Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be held at the funeral home at 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Father James Kurtz as celebrant.

Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans' Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone. Military honors will be accorded by Veterans Honor Guard Post 13.

The family requests that contributions be made to the WMHS Home Hospice or the Make a Wish Foundation.
