After his marriage Whit was employed with the U.S. Postal Department at Mexia as a rural mail carrier. Whit and Ruby bought a house and farm near Mexia in 1913, there their three children were born. When the oil boom was discovered in Mexia in 1920, Whit bought a large farm in Coolidge and in 1923 he moved to his new home with his family and Ruby's father, W.J. Hayter. Whit was a wise and aggressive farmer and continued to buy land until he owned a sizeable farm, which his wife and children continued to operate until Ruby's death.
