Whit was one of 10 children who lived on a farm at Honest Ridge in Limestone County. The family had livestock, raised cotton and corn, and had fine gardens and watermelons. They went to Horn Hill to gin the cotton, to Thelma for store supplies, and to Groesbeck and Mexia to sell the cotton and corn.
After his marriage Whit was employed with the U.S. Postal Department at Mexia as a rural mail carrier. Whit and Ruby bought a house and farm near Mexia in 1913, there their three children were born. When the oil boom was discovered in Mexia in 1920, Whit bought a large farm in Coolidge and in 1923 he moved to his new home with his family and Ruby's father, W.J. Hayter. Whit was a wise and aggressive farmer and continued to buy land until he owned a sizeable farm, which his wife and children continued to operate until Ruby's death.
