Mattie Novell Dismuke, a resident of Seabrook, Texas, entered into rest Tuesday, March 7, 2006, in Clear Lake, at the age of 91 years, 1 month, and 22 days.

Mattie was born on Jan. 13, 1915, to Joseph Ammon Billings and Maggie Mae Felts Billings in Rocksprings. She graduated from Rocksprings High School and attended business school in Corpus Christi.

Mattie worked in the airplane parts department at Kelly Field in San Antonio during World War II and managed a cleaners and laundry business in Houston for about 25 years. After retirement, she owned and operated Granny's Fried Chicken in Floresville with her sister-in-law.

Mattie resided in San Antonio; in Houston from 1946 to 1977, then returned to Floresville; and in Seabrook for the past 11 years.

She married William Earnest, who preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 1941. She then married Edmond Serres in 1943, who preceded her in death in 1954. Mattie then married J.B. "Booth" Dismuke, Sr. on Sept. 13, 1980, in the Marcelina Baptist Church. Booth preceded Mattie in death on Nov. 12, 1991.

Mrs. Dismuke was a member of the Marcelina Baptist Church in Wilson County. She was mechanically-inclined and enjoyed keeping things in working order all by herself.

Mrs. Dismuke was preceded in death by her parents; first, second, and third husbands; one brother; and four sisters.

Mattie is survived by her daughter, Beatrice Sartain of Seabrook; granddaughters, Brenda Sartain and Heather Novell Sartain; a great-granddaughter, Sarah Novell Churchill; a great-grandson, David Zachary Schreckengosv; a stepson, J.B. Dismuke and wife Betty; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Visitation began at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 10, in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

Funeral services took place at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the funeral home chapel, officiated by the Rev. Olen Wilson of Marcelina Baptist Church. Musical selections included "The Old Rugged Cross," "Amazing Grace," and "Rock of Ages."

Interment followed in the Marcelina Cemetery in Wilson County.

Serving as pallbearers were J.B. Dismuke, George Hill, Ed Sartain, Leon Scrutchins, and David Schreckengosv.
