Willie Lee GARRETT, Obit:

Willie Lee Garrett passed away on February 26, 2006, eight days past her 103rd birthday, at Woodland Hills Nursing Home in Allen, Oklahoma. The daughter of John and Nannie Raydon Pusley, Willie was born February 18, 1903, at Gerty, Oklahoma, while it was still known as Indian Territory. She was one of the last few surviving original enrollees of the Choctaw Nation. Willie spent her entire life in the Gerty area. She attended Gerty Schools.

She was married at Gerty to William Ode Garrett on March 30, 1919, when she was barely 16 years old. Together in Gerty they owned and operated Garretts Grocery while farming peanuts and cotton for many years, until their retirement in 1967, when they moved to Non. After 66 years together, Ode passed away on October 22, 1985. Willie continued to live in the Non area until her health failed about four years ago. Willies family was her first love. She wasnt a typical housewife and homemaker. It wasnt cooking, sewing and housework that she truly enjoyed. It was the outdoors and riding horses that she enjoyed more than anything, particularly a horse named Shorty that she never forgot and often mentioned.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Nanny Pusley; daughter and son-in-law, Aligene and Lloyd Mauldin; daughter-in-law, Eula Garrett; grandson, Louis Garrett; great-grandson, Robert Lloyd Wood; and her sisters, Juanita Powell and Engels Coker. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Blan and Gerri Garrett of Non; four grandchildren, Linda Orr and husband Tommy of Non, Norma Holt and husband Johnny of Ada, Sandra Wood and husband Larry of McAlester, and Bennie Mauldin and wife Loretta, also of McAlester; seven great-grandchildren, Doug Orr of Non, Lea Lucas of Ada, Brent Wood and Wes Wood, both of McAlester, Bryan Cassell of Tulsa, Dennis Cassell of Stroud, and Cody Mauldin of McAlester; 12 great-great-grandchildren; one niece, Cleo Buchner of McAlester; one granddaughter-in-law, Lou Garrett of Non; and many other relatives and family friends.
