An Obituary from "Gatesville Messenger & Star Forum," Friday, February 24, 1956:

Hugh Reynolds Saunders, 73, a Gatesville postal worker for 47 and 1/2 years before his retirement in 1952 died at 7 a.m. Thursday in the local hospital. He had been in failing health for two years and had been hospitalized the last ten days.
Mr. Saunders was assistant postmaster here for 40 years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Scott's Chapel, Rev. Herman Boyd officiating. Burial will be in Restland Cemetery.
Mr. Saunders was born in Gatesville Nov. 11, 1882, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Saunders, pioneer settlers of this city.
He began work at the post office at the age of 22 as the carrier for Rural Route 3, the first man to
deliver mail in that area. After seven years as route carrier, he became assistant postmaster in 1912.
Mr. Saunders worked under five different postmasters and in three different post office buildings here.
A Member of the Methodist Church, Mr. Saunders was married to Miss Ethel King March 15, 1915, and she survives him.
Also surviving are one son, J. R. Saunders of Gatesville and a grandson Jeb Saunders of Gatesville.
