Henry was the son of Hezekiah and Hannah (McConner) Hand. Henry enlisted in the service on August 15, 1862 as a Private in 100th Indiana Infantry, Company C. On September 1, 1862, he was promoted to Full Hospital Steward and promoted to Full Surgeon on May 1865. He was a brother to Charles E. Hand, who served in the same company in the war. Henry married Sarah Wheeler about 1867. Their children were: Lena B "Lennia", Nellie M., and Myrtle Electra Hand.
