GILBERT "GIB" MONROE FRONTZ JR., 76, of Mansfield, died early Monday morning, July 25, 2005, at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital after an extended illness.

Born December 18, 1928, in Ashland County, he was the son of Gilbert M. Sr. and Ethel Allenbaugh Frontz. Gib retired from Roper Industries and was a member of Perrysville Baptist Church. He was a life member of American Legion Post #16, V.F.W. Post #9943, Amvets Post #26, a past member of the Richland County Burial Squad and member of the Joint Veterans Council. He had served as past Commander for the American Legion and was a trustee of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during both WWII and the Korean War and was active in many military organizations after his discharge. Gib was an umpire for boy's high school baseball, girl's high school softball and adult slow pitch softball, and played adult softball as well. He was an original founder and builder of the Wayside Ballpark and created the first league for women softball players in Central Ohio. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and Rotorheads Association.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Freeman Frontz; children and their spouses, Gilbert M. III Kathy Frontz, Beth M. Medley, and Geoffrey Frontz, all of Mansfield, Nancy David Kleshinski of Gahanna, and William E. Billie Jo Frontz of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; ten grandchildren, Gilbert M. IV, Gina, David, Brandon, Michelle, Michael, Kevin, Kendra, Katlain and Karli; three great-grandchildren, Cassandra, Gilbert M.V, and Kaleigh; two brothers, Albert Frontz of Perrysville and George Gen Frontz of Winter Haven, Florida; two sisters, Emma Jack Frank of St. Joe, Indiana, and Mona Wilging of Mansfield; brother-in-law, Dr. Jack L. Joyce Freeman of Cincinnati; and special friends, Robert and Joan Sedlak, John and Jill Hurlow.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Barbara Trumpower, Mary Frank, Irma Heimberger and Mabel Rapp.

Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, Wednesday, July 27, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Howard Barnett will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Military graveside services conducted by Richland County Joint Veterans Council will follow in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Soldier and Sailors Memorial Building.
