BROWN, THOMAS HENRY: Private in Company D, born 19 Feb 1840. Enlist in Franklin County 20 May 1861, age 21. Present through Oct 1861. Absent sick in hospital Jan-Feb 1862. Present 30 Sept – 31 Oct 1862. Absent sick with chronic diarrhea in Danville hospital 1 Nov 1862. Transferred to Front Royal hospital. Wounded in Action at Raccoon Ford 11 Oct 1863. Absent wounded in Charlottesville hospital 16 Oct 1863. Furloughed for 30 days 7 Nov 1863. Present May – June 1864. Absent in hospital July – Aug 1864. No further record. Died Halesford 17 July 1912. Buried Brown Cemetery on Route 670 Franklin County.

The official records states: Thomas Henry Brown was 21 years old, join Troop D, 2nd VA Cav, Capt. Giles W B Hale's Company of Cavalry (Franklin Rangers), Radford's Regiment Rangers, 30 Virginia Vols. - Enrolled for active service 20 May 1861 in Franklin County by Capt. Hale for 1 year. Mustered into service 22 May 1861 at Lynchburg by Lt. Col. D A Langhorne. To place of muster into service 50 miles. Valuation of horse, $15.00. Value of equipment's, $20.00.

The unit did not surrender at Appomattox but broke through the Yankee lines and were mustered out at Lynchburg on the same field they were mustered in on. It was rumored the Yankees were confiscating the horses, guns, etc.
