Great Aunt Nell was a wonderful woman who was consistently humble about the information she was so willing to share. She was famous for telling me "I don't know all that much" just before launching into a 30 minute conversation about what the work camps were like during the war. Like all those of her generation, she was a jewel in the family crown. Aunt Nell was our longest-living matriarch and the last living link I had to a sibling of my grandfather, John Dixon. Aunt Nell was the keeper of the burial place of my Great Grandmother and she lived long enough to know that me and Dad finally placed a marker for Ida Dixon. I was in Phoenix the year before Aunt Nell passed away and like many of us who miss opportunities, I was in too much of a hurry to stop by. Goldie's baby girl is now with him and I hope she has discovered all the secrets that he has packed away from the living. The best thing I loved about Aunt Nell was that she was always talking about moving back home to Savanna, Oklahoma. Maybe she passed by to visit before she met the pearly gates. During our last converation, about two weeks before she died, Nell was busy naming names and leaving me with any possible links I could use to carry on my research. She passed away from me just like she ended a phone conversation "Well, I guess that's all" (click). It does leave you with a bit of a smile and we never said goodbye.
