In July of 1889, Melzena's father died. Although she was only a 14 years of age, Melzena was married to Henry Owensby in 26 January 1890. Henry was not yet 20. Both Henry and Melzena's parents had to give their consent for the marriage which took place in the home of Melzena's mother.
In 1902 Melzena and Henry moved their family to California. Henry was a farmer and then opened a gas station with his son Wesley. It was located on the same street as the family home.
Henry and Melzina had 5 children. Only 3 of the children, Sherman, Etta Amy and Wesley survived to adulthood. Lonzo and Oma died as children. Henry died at the age of 57 in Fresno, California. Melzina was a widow for 38 years. She lived the remainer of her life in Fresno County where she was a member of the Memorial Baptist church.
